Skype is de populairste voip-client, waarmee je wereldwijd gratis kunt (video)bellen via internet en chatten. Sinds 2011 heeft Microsoft Skype overgenomen.

Skype 7.0.0 is afgelopen vrijdag uitgebracht voor Windows (de Mac-versie was opvallend genoeg al eerder beschikbaar). Deze uitgave van Skype heeft een vernieuwde, ruimer opgezette interface die de bel- en chatervaring beter moet maken. Ook is het uiterlijk van Skype nu consistent op desktop, tablet en mobiel met dezelfde iconen en thumbnails voor contacten.

Handig is dat je nu kunt multi-tasken: je kunt tegelijkertijd een gesprek voeren en ondertussen een bestand sturen via de chat. Ook het gratis groepsvideobellen moet beter werken in Skype 7. Ten slotte kun je nu kiezen voor een compactere weergave van zijbalk en chat, als je het nieuwe design te ruim vindt. Kijk daarvoor onder menu Beeld.

Het nieuwe design van Skype 7

Skype is te downloaden voor Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1. Er zijn ook versies voor Mac OS X, Linux, iPhone en iPad, Windows Phone en Android. Skype is in het Nederlands vertaald.

• Compact sidebar: Some of you asked us to see more contacts and conversation in the left hand sidebar. Enable the option "Compact Sidebar View" from the "View" menu for a more compact layout.
• Compact Chat View: If you can live without your chat message having some whitespace around them to give them room to breathe you can now increase your "message per inch" ratio drastically by activating "Compact Chat view" in Skype Options - "IM & SMS" - Advanced settings. Also don't miss out on the other available tweaks to the UI we wrote about earlier.
• Toggle for large emoticons: Some users prefer not to show emoticons sent in an individual messages in a larger size. You can find an option to toggle this in the Skype Options - "IM & SMS" - "IM appearance"
• Toggle for unread messages: You can now quickly switch between your conversations that contain unread messages and all by using the dropdown on top right of your "Recent" list. See the screenshot on the right
• Touch scrolling: If you are sporting a device with a touch screen like a tablet you can now use vertical finger swipes to scroll in conversations. Better have a screen wipe at hand all the time though

Today we’re excited to announce Skype for Mac 7.0 as well as the preview for the new Skype for Windows – both of which have been redesigned to make it easier to chat and share. If you’re already using Skype on mobile, you’ll recognize some of these changes. We’ve made the Skype experience consistent whether you are using your mobile device or your desktop PC. Now, you’ll see thumbnail pictures of your contacts, a new bubble-style chat design, and consistent icons for chat, video calls and audio calls.

Here are the things you should try when you download Skype for Mac 7.0 and the preview for the new Skype for Windows.

Improved chat experience
For the last year we’ve dedicated a lot of time to refresh the chat experience in Skype. We’ve brought more improvements to the desktop. Photos in your new Skype for Windows and Mac apps show up as you’d expect, beautifully displayed for your instant viewing. On Windows, there’s more spacing between contacts and chats, as well as message previews for unread chats, making it even easier to follow conversations.

We’ve made improvements to other types of file sharing, too. When you share file types like Office documents and PDFs, you’ll see file icons displayed to make it easier to visually scan for and find different files in your chat history.

Chat and call simultaneously with one click
People love multi-tasking. Many of you already exchange IMs while on a live call today. With the new side-by-side design, you can effortlessly multi-task on a voice or video call. On Mac, it only takes one click. Share messages, photos or files for a more active conversation together, without ever leaving your call.
