Foxit Reader 4.2.0.0928

Foxit Reader 4.2.0 is verschenen. In deze versie van de snelle PDF lezer zijn drie problemen opgelost. Ook is de beveiliging aangescherpt doordat Foxit Reader 4.2 nu DEP en ASLR ondersteunt. Dit zijn twee in Windows ingebouwde beveiligingsmechanismen die ervoor moeten zorgen dat applicaties minder snel kwaadaardige code uitvoeren. Foxit moet hierdoor resistenter worden voor de vele aanvallen die met PDF-bestanden worden uitgevoerd.

Let bij de installatie van Foxit Reader heel goed op dat u de onnodige Ask-Toolbar niet mee-installeert! Klik op Decline  als u gevraagd wordt of u de Ask Toolbar wilt, dan wordt deze werkbalk niet geïnstalleerd. Vinkjes weghalen alleen is niet genoeg - wat vroeger wel zo was.

Foxit Reader 4.1.1.0805

Foxit Reader 4.1.1 verhelpt het deze week ontdekte ernstige beveiligingslek in de PDF-lezer. Binnen drie dagen heeft Foxit een beveiligingsupdate uitgebracht die het lek dichtplakt. Concurrent Adobe Reader brengt pas na 16 augustus een update uit voor een andere ernstige kwetsbaarheid.

Let bij de installatie van Foxit Reader heel goed op dat u de onnodige Ask-Toolbar niet mee-installeert! Klik op Decline  als u gevraagd wordt of u de Ask Toolbar wilt, dan wordt deze werkbalk niet geïnstalleerd. Vinkjes weghalen alleen is niet genoeg - wat vroeger wel zo was.

Alternatieven voor Foxit Reader zijn er ook: het nieuwe Nitro PDF Reader bijvoorbeeld.

Foxit Reader 4.1.0.0726

Foxit Reader 4.1 is een kleine update voor de gratis PDF lezer die kleine foutjes oplost. Zo worden enkele crashes bij het openen van bepaalde pdf-bestanden verholpen. Ook is het scrollen door heel grote pdf-documenten minder traag in deze versie.

Let bij de installatie van Foxit Reader heel goed op dat u de onnodige Ask-Toolbar niet mee-installeert! Klik op Decline  als u gevraagd wordt of u de Ask Toolbar wilt, dan wordt deze werkbalk niet geïnstalleerd. Vinkjes weghalen alleen is niet genoeg - wat vroeger wel zo was.

Alternatieven voor Foxit Reader zijn er ook: het nieuwe Nitro PDF Reader bijvoorbeeld.

Foxit Reader 4.0.0.0619

Foxit Reader 4.0 is verschenen. Bij de installatie van versie 4 van de kleine PDF lezer wordt de Safe Reading modus standaard aangezet, zodat Foxit minder kwetsbaar is voor de vele aanvallen die plaatsvinden door middel van schadelijke pdf-bestanden.

De interface van Foxit Reader 4.0 is verfraaid met nieuwe menu-knoppen en de mogelijkheden tot samenwerking (collaboration) aan documenten is uitgebreid. Tot de toegevoegde professionele functionaliteit - zoals Foxit het noemt - behoren commentaar geven, spellingcontrole, tekstconversie en bewerking van pdf'jes.

Let bij de installatie van Foxit Reader goed op dat u de onnodige Ask-Toolbar niet mee-installeert. Bij onze installatie hadden we alle vinkjes weggehaald voor de Ask-toolbar, maar toch werd deze werkbalk geïnstalleerd in Firefox en Internet Explorer. Dit soort 'foutjes' in het installatiebestand van Foxit Reader zijn fratsen waar wij niet van houden. De werkbalken zijn natuurlijk wel te de-installeren, maar deze praktijken moeten niet een gewoonte worden.

[Noot redactie: Onze bewering is niet correct. Als u op Decline klikt bij de Ask Toolbar dan wordt deze werkbalk niet geïnstalleerd. Vinkjes weghalen is niet genoeg - wat vroeger wel zo was. Blijven opletten bij elke nieuwe versie is dus - ook voor ons - het devies. Dank aan oplettende bezoeker GJW]

Foxit Reader 3.3.1.0518

Foxit Reader 3.3.1 is uitbracht. In deze versie van het Adobe Reader-alternatief is de beveiliging aangescherpt. Foxit Reader blokkeert nu pop-up dialogen die door kwaadaardige pdf-bestanden kunnen worden misbruikt, zodat gebruikers niet verleid worden tot acties die tot schade aan de pc kunnen leiden.
 
Let bij de installatie van Foxit Reader goed op dat u de onnodige Ask-Toolbar niet mee-installeert.

Security Enhancement
The New Foxit Reader has implemented a new screening process which protects end users from misleading messages embedded within the parameters of a pop-up dialog box. A pop-up dialog contains an area which is reserved for a message that is generated by the rendered PDF. Due to Foxit's concern that this message may mislead users to take an unadvisable action, Foxit Reader will no longer display the content of the message and removes any parameters within the Pop-up message that can be manipulated by the PDF.

Foxit Reader 3.3.0.0430

Foxit Reader 3.3 is uitgekomen. Voornaamste nieuwe eigenschap is de Secure Trust Manager waarmee bepaalde, mogelijk riskante, acties voor PDF-documenten kunnen worden verboden of toegestaan. Het gaat hier bijvoorbeeld om JavaScript-functies, gegevensoverdracht, acties van ingebedde bijlagen enzovoort.

De Secure Trust Manager moet voorkomen dat PDF-bestanden gebruikt worden voor aanvallen door malware en virussen. Standaard staat Foxit Reader 3.3 ingesteld op de zogeheten Safe Reading Mode, die enkele potentiële gevaren blokkeert. Deze nieuwe functie is natuurlijk toegevoegd om de vele beveiligingsproblemen met PDF in te dammen en de als onveilig bekend staande concurrent Adobe Reader af te troeven. Het zal interessant zijn om te zien of Foxit slaagt in deze opzet.

Verder zijn nog wat fouten opgelost. Let bij de installatie van Foxit Reader goed op dat u de onnodige Ask-Toolbar niet mee-installeert.

Foxit Reader 3.2.1.0401

Foxit Reader 3.2.1.0401 fixt een 'niet te repareren' beveiligingslek. Althans, de Belgische ontdekker Didier Stevens van het beveiligingsprobleem in PDF-documenten noemt het een lek zonder oplossing. Er wordt bij het uitbuiten van de zwakte namelijk gebruik gemaakt van de mogelijkheid om in PDF-documenten uitvoerbare bestanden in te bedden. En dit is een eigenschap (feature) van het PDF-bestandsformaat. Als het de bedoeling is dat ingebedde bestanden in PDF-documenten uitgevoerd kunnen worden, hoe kun je dan voorkomen dat schadelijke bestanden uitgevoerd worden?

Adobe Reader toont - als extra beveiliging - een waarschuwing voordat de uitvoerbare bestanden gestart worden. Niet een optimale oplossing, maar het is in ieder geval wat. Foxit Reader liet tot nog toe zelfs helemaal geen waarschuwing zien en voerde de ingebedde bestanden gewoon uit. Met de update naar Foxit 3.2.1.0401 vertoont de lichte pdf-lezer nu ook een waarschuwing voordat bestanden uitgevoerd worden. Netjes wordt eerst toestemming gevraagd aan de gebruiker. Of het iets helpt bij aanvallen die gebruikmaken van deze mogelijkheid in PDF-documenten is de vraag. U bent in ieder geval gewaarschuwd.

Foxit Reader 3.2.0.0303

In Foxit Reader 3.2.0.0303 zijn honderden fouten opgelost. Ook zijn nieuwe eigenschappen geïntroduceerd in de snelle pdf-lezer. Zo is Undo en Redo aan het menu toegevoegd om acties en vergissingen snel ongedaan te kunnen maken.

Verder is de optie om in zwart-wit te printen in Foxit Reader nieuw. Sowieso zijn de afdrukmogelijkheden, met name de printsnelheid, sterk verbeterd.

Ten slotte zijn de paginanummeringen en bladwijzermogelijkheden aangepakt en is de JavaScript-ondersteuning beter.
